Winslow Judo Club Report          Judo Jumelage 2007

In May a large party of Judo Players and their supporters travelled to Winslow from the Towns ‘Twinned’ club in Cours La Ville France as part of the Towns ‘Twinning’  The weekend involved a joint training session, social events and of course a Judo competition. It was a superbly exciting well matched event with players from novice level, through to experience teenagers and adults all showing wonderful Judo spirit and skills. In the end Winslow Just edged ahead by one contest to win back the special Jumelage trophy that they lost in France last year. Everyone had a great time and are now looking forward to next year when it will be Winslow turn to travel to France again.

This type of event is not possible without the hard work of many people and the Club wish to thank them all.

                                                    Winslow Judo Club report

11 junior players ( from age 8 to under 16) from Winslow Judo Club traveled to High Wycombe on Sunday to take part in a Bucks Area Competitive Judo Grading and 7 came back with a higher belt grade. There are 18 junior grades to go for in the British Judo Association junior grading system. The five who did not make it this time all contested well and showed good fighting spirit but needed to be able to do just that bit more, so for them, its back to more hard practice till the next grading in three months.

First on to the tatami (mats) was Zoe Hitchen in the girls section and she was able to demonstrate to the Examiners that she was worthy of being promoted to her first competitive grade of 7th Mon (first orange belt) Then in the boys section Sam Minnitt won his 9th Mon (top orange belt as did Cameron Hillston and Jack Coker. Then it was the turn of the older more experienced junior players with Tom Lewis winning his 10th Mon (first green belt) Selby Justice 11th Mon (second green belt) and Kit Damant 12th Mon (top green belt) Winslow’s coaches were pleased with all the players performance and the experience the players gained will stand them in good stead for when the clubs ‘twinned’ Judo club from France visits in May.

Winslow Judo Club draws players from a wide area to its Saturday afternoon training sessions and visitors from other clubs are always welcome to come along for an extra practice. Details of the club are at www.winslowjudoclub.org.uk  or ring 01296 713686

Winslow Judo Clubs Martin Wilkins was celebrating last month the conformation of his promotion to 2nd Dan Black Belt.

Martin started Judo with WJC when aged 9 he worked his way through all the junior grades and won his 18th Mon Brown belt when aged 15. As soon as he was able to in 2004, he attended  his first  Senior grading to try to convert his junior grade to Senior but he did much better than that and put in such a good performance he also won promotion to Black belt 1st Dan at just age 16.

Since then he has been building up his contesting experience, including representing Northern Home Counties in the National Team Championships and gaining the required promotion points won at various contest, this has now resulted in him being promoted to Black belt 2nd Dan and still only aged 18.

WJC Coach, Malcolm McPartlan said; ‘’this is a superb achievement and quite unusual at such a young age, everyone at the club is really proud and pleased for him; he has worked hard and deserves his success. ’’ Martin is not stopping there though he has his sights on the next level and says he would love to represent his Country at Judo one day.

Tony's Promotion:   Photos

For those of you who remember me, Tony Kunkle, your American friend.  Before I left the UK in January 2004, I was very close to earning the rank of Shodan.  But, I was transferred back to the USA before I could earn all of the necessary competition points.  Soon after I settled back into the USA I searched for a local Judo Club.  Unfortunately, Judo is not nearly as popular here as it is in the UK.  However, I did find a Judo Club at a nearby University and am frequently beat upon by the younger college boys.  My Cuban coach is a Godan, 5th degree black belt.  He sometimes invites other Cuban Judoka to the club who are highly ranked and of Cuban national and Olympic level.  So, I am always sure to walk, or crawl, off the mat with humility.  One female Judoka is from the Ivory Coast in West Africa.  She competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics for Ivory Coast.  As it turned out, she practiced at the very same Dojo I had when I first began Judo in Abidjan, Ivory Coast back in 1994.  We didn't know each other then though.  I'm also sure to acquire a full dose of humility while in Randori with her.  The moral of the story is, "If you want to get better at Judo, practice with somebody who is better than you."

Finding Judo tournaments is also not an easy thing to do for me.  Many times I found myself travelling a couple hundred miles just to spend 10 minutes on the mat.  But, it has been worth it.  Last November I placed second in a tournament down near Los Angeles, California and earned enough points for promotion to Shodan.  I have been a member of the United States Judo Association (USJA) since I moved back to the USA, therefore had to also meet the technical requirements of the USJA for the rank of  Shodan.  During the weekend of 16-18 December, I attended a Judo clinic up in Northern California (a plane ride away) and learned valuable skills as well as earned additional points toward promotion.  At the end of the clinic I was examined for the rank of Shodan and passed with high marks.  My paperwork has been sent in to USJA HQS and we plan to have my current coach present me with a black belt soon after the holiday season.

I want to thank all you at Winslow Judo Club for the encouragement, support and good practices you provided to me over the past several years.  I'm not sure when I'll be able to return to the UK to practice with you all again, but believe me when I say you're all in my thoughts when I think of Judo.  Thank you and have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.    Tony
